Playful communities Examples in Wales Using school grounds out of hours Dormant outdoor space within the school grounds has been invigorated by a sensitive design to meet the needs of the school as well as the local community. The local community is able to use the area after school hours, on weekends and during holidays, promoting a real sense of community usage. The area is central to both ends of the valley settlement, and was identified as the best place to develop new play facilities by local community members. A local housing association, RCT Homes, granted additional money to Maerdy Regeneration (a local community group) to fund an area within the space, which the budget would not have allowed otherwise. This funding has seen the inclusion of a ball play area, bringing in facilities for older children. By undertaking training the school has been supported to become more comfortable in maintaining and managing the playspace beyond the life of the project.
